Birth of The Church

In my recent readings and research I was reading through Acts as I have read countless times. Acts is one of my favorite books in the Bible. To preface this Peter and the Apostles were in the upper room awaiting the promise of the Father—the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2 the Holy spirit came upon the Apostles and they began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Then it hit me—check this next part out; I had never read it like this before but check out Acts 2:5 where it says “And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.” On the day of Pentecost, God made it possible for the Holy Spirit to overflow beyond the borders of Israel. Gods timing was so perfect that he had travelers to be present, ones who would carry the gospel back to their homes and begin local bodies of believers within their own communities. On that day three thousand people “accepted his message and were baptized” (Acts 2:41). Peter’s message would mark the birth of the Church. However the impact on that day reached beyond the walls of Jerusalem. Gods timing is so perfect and right on time.

Problem into Opportunity

Romans 8:31 says God is for us and He is not against us.
To every problem Jesus looks at it as a opportunity.

• Sickness is an opportunity for healing
• Sorrow is an opportunity for compassion
• Fear is an opportunity for faith
• Sin is an opportunity for forgiveness

With Jesus every one of us is a gold mine of undiscovered possibilities

To Jesus the important fact about you and me is not that we are sinners but we can be saints—through Gods love and mercy on our lives

Man can be born again! Characters can change! We can become a new person! Life can be beautiful! There is a solution to every problem! There is light behind every shadow!!!

My Love Prayer

This is my prayer for today based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

God help me to never give up on the calling You have for my life, or care more for others than for myself.
Help me to not want what I don’t have, or strut, or ever get a swelled head-because of Your blessing and favor on my life.
Help me to not force my personal agenda on others, or ever have a”me first,” attitude.
God help me to not fly off the handle in frustration of my insecurities or inadequacies.
Help me to not keep score of the sins of others, or revel when others grovel.
Help me to take pleasure in the flowering of truth, and put up with anything out of love.
Help me to trust You always, and always looks for the best in everything and everyone.
God help me to never look back, and keep going to the end—to stay the course You God have set out for me.
I love You Lord!!!!
In Jesus Name

Leaders Prayers

James calls leaders to pray in a specific way and function for leaders to perform.

James 5:13-16 says,
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses[a] to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Consider what James calls leaders to do:

1) Identify
Leaders are to identify the problems, then also identify with the problems. They are to come to the aid to those in need, whether they suffer from sickness, suffering or sin.

2) Intercede
Leaders are to pray for those in need.

3) Intervene
Leaders are to throw themselves in the direction of their prayers. In addition to prayer, they should do anything they can to aid in the restoration for which they so earnestly pray.

Recruited Not Volunteered

John 6:70 says, Then Jesus said, “I chose the twelve of you”

Never in the Bible does it show that the disciples volunteered for their positions. They were recruited. Jesus chose the twelve.

In Acts 6, they chose 7 to continue the daily distribution of food to help so that the Apostles could give themselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. In return the word of God spread, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great number of followers were obedient to the faith.

Remember that today if you are in ministry or in the workforce, leaders are recruited and don’t necessarily volunteer. Mainly because leaders are already doing many things.

Think Offense not Defense

The book of Acts–(a book of action—It is called “Acts” and not “Reacts”) begins with a bang where Jesus speaks His final words to His men. Even though they are now leaders and not followers they ask Jesus when His Kindgom would come:

Acts 1:6
they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Jesus doesn’t tell them, but instead communicates a vision about reaching the world.

Acts 1:8
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me[a] in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth

His men thought defense, and Jesus wanted them to think offense.

Charisma

Teaching from Acts 2:1-41 and John Maxwell Leadership Bible

Acts 2 marks a pivitol movement in the new testament—the church was birthed with 120 charter members in the upper room

Peter gets filled with the spirit and –the same Peter who ran in fear on the night of Jesus trial—now speaks boldly
Within minutes he has captivated the audience because he had Charisma.

Most people think of Charisma as something mystical almost indefinable. But that is not true. Charisma is the ability to draw people to you and your cause.

Peter did 4 things when he spoke—now this is not just about speaking and preaching this comes down to leadership and being able to relate to the people.

1) Confidence
Peter displayed poise and optimism as a communicator
2) Conviction
He knew where he was going and where he had to stay spoke from his heart
3) Connection
He focused not on himself, but on others
4) Compassion
He exuded warmth and love, He gave people practical answers to their needs

What are some things we can do to build this Charisma?

1) Love life—don’t complain and enjoy the journey
2) Put a 10 on everyone’s forehead- expect the best out of people and treat them well
3) Give people hope—everything looks for hope, leaders deal it out
4) Share yourself. Be vulnerable and real share your heart

I am HE

In John 18 there is an amazing story, check this out.

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

The same troops and officers armed with lanterns, torches and weapons…..literally fell to the ground when Jesus spoke those 3 words..”I am He.” That is some amazing power, we need to remember this in our daily lives, we might not have armed troops and officers coming after us, but we do have doubt, depression, fear and many other weapons the enemy tries to use against us.

Remember the same Jesus that said, “I am He” and the armed troops fell to the ground lives inside you today so no weapon formed against you will prosper.

13

Ok so this is probably one of the hardest post I have written with the exception of “A Fathers Struggle.” My oldest daughter turns 13 today and I still remember when she was born, when she first walked, our first emergency room visit and many other amazing memories. So I admit that I have been a little emotional these past few days and possibly even shed a tear or two :*)

As she grows up I ask myself:

Am I doing a good job as a father?

Are we making the right choices for her?

Are you coaching her enough?

Are you praying enough for her?

As a parent our authority turns to more influence as we see our kids grow up. It is harder for us to release our children to make some adult choices. My daughter has had to make some pretty big choices and decisions recently that I cant share in a blog.

Last night I was reading to her and after 2 chapters she said to me “one more chapter Dad.” With a tear I said, “When you become a teenager are you still going to ask me to read you one more chapter?” She said “of course”, and I thought about recording her say that but I didn’t. :)

In my prayer time the past few days I have really been praying to God to “Make me the best Father to my children that I possibly can.” That should be every fathers prayer. Make me the best Father to my children that I possibly can. I am going to continue to pray that the rest of my life.

So pray for me as my daughter turns 13 :*) and as a father pray this prayer
